The Sacrament of Confirmation
Confirmation is the second of the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation.
It completes Baptism through the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred Chrism. Where Baptism gives new life in the Spirit, Confirmation deepens and completes that gift, perfecting our communion with the Church, uniting us more firmly to Christ, and conferring a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit that strengthens us to live and bear witness to the faith.
Through this sacrament, we are reminded of our call to share in the mission of Jesus and to follow Him more closely.
What Happens During Confirmation
The sacrament includes:
- Renewal of Baptismal Promises
- Laying on of hands as the bishop prays for the gifts of the Holy Spirit
- Anointing with Chrism, sealing the candidate with the gift of the Holy Spirit
- The Sign of Peace, symbolising belonging to the Church community
Confirmation for Children
Baptised Catholic children in Year 6 or above, who have completed Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, are eligible to receive Confirmation.
