Baptism
Through the waters of Baptism, we are freed from original sin, reborn into new life as children of God, incorporated into the Body of Christ, and made sharers in God’s life and the Church’s mission. In the Baptism of infants, the Church entrusts a child to God’s grace at the very beginning of life, recognising that parents and the whole Parish community share in the responsibility of nurturing the faith that is received.
Symbols of Baptism
Baptism with Water
Water symbolises cleansing and the washing away of original sin. It is also a sign of new life, the spiritual life the child now enters.
Anointing with Oil
Before Baptism, the child is anointed on the chest with the Oil of Catechumen which imparts spiritual strength to resist evil and prepares the child for the grace they are about to receive. After Baptism, the crown of the child’s head is anointed with Sacred Chrism oil. This anointing configures the child to Christ, who is Priest, Prophet, and King, and anticipates the anointing at Confirmation.
White Garment
The white garment or bib signifies purity, innocence, and the new life received in Christ.
Candle
The baptismal candle, lit from the Paschal Candle, signifies that the child, having received new life in the risen Christ, is now enlightened by Christ and called to walk always as a child of the light.

Documents Required for Infant Baptism
To baptise your child in the Catholic Church, please provide the following documents:
- Child’s Birth Certificate
- At least one parent’s Baptism Certificate
- Proof of residency (if required by the parish)
- Godparents’ details, including:
➤ Full Name
➤ Religion (at least one godparent must be a baptised and confirmed Catholic)
