The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (or penance) is one of the two sacraments of healing, and one of the most profound expressions of God’s mercy in the life of the Church.
Stages of the Sacrament
The sacrament involves four acts on the part of the penitent:
- Contrition (sincere sorrow for sin and firm intention not to sin again);
- Confession of sins to the priest;
- Receiving forgiveness (absolution); and
- Acceptance of an act of penance.
The effects of the sacrament are profound:
- forgiveness of sins;
- reconciliation with God and the restoration to the state of grace;
- reconciliation with the Church; and
- as the Catechism describes it, “peace and serenity of conscience and spiritual consolation.”
Sacrament of Reconciliation for Children
Children in our parish who are baptised Catholic and in Year 4 or above are eligible to prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
This sacrament is usually celebrated in Term 1 as part of our parish‑based Sacramental Program.
